Philippine customs for marriage

From pre-colonial indigenous rituals to Catholic, Chinese, and Islamic customs, Philippine ceremony customs are a lovely fusion of native and foreign influences. However, despite having a variety of roots, love and commitment are the central themes in all Filipino ceremony festivities.

A traditional Filipino wedding, such as the pamanhikan, in which the groom’s family pays the bride a visit to publicly ask for her hand in marriage, was an extravaganza of folk rituals long before Spain colonized the Philippines. A babaylan would thank the couple on the first day while holding their joined fingers over a dish of wheat. The pair finally went back to their orchard and enjoyed a delicious meal there until the next morning.

The majority of communities in the Philippines also adhere to pamanhikan customs today, but they do so with a more contemporary flair. To the babaylan’s home, the bride and groom may be led on individual festivities while frequently carrying foods or flowers as donations. The few did subsequently kiss and hug each other as the babaylan will beg over the wheat tray.

The newlyweds will typically receive a kalamay rain from their customers during the reception( a disk of slippery wheat cakes ). The grain serves as a reminder of their commitment to remain united throughout their marriage. Additionally, it serves as a way for them to express their gratitude for their assistance and cooperation in the wedding festivities.

The newlyweds will then dance during the money dance, also known as” the dollar dance.” The bride and groom’s friends and family gather in sherengas during this time to dance with them while having payments pinned or taped to their garments. The sum of income raised represents their gifts and well wishes for the newlyweds.
